How to Choose the Right Certified Aging in Place Specialist
If you are looking to have any home improvements done on your home you should hire a CAPS to perform the work.
What is a CAPS? A CAPS is a Certified Aging in Place Specialist. An individual who has had extensive training focusing on the unique needs of the aging population. The CAPS designation is awarded by the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB). According to NAHB, the CAPS designation program teaches the technical, business management, and customer service skills essential to competing in the aging-in-place market. The program was developed by NAHB, NAHB Research Center and AARP.
Being armed with this information, how do you go about choosing the right CAPS for you? Begin with your local Association of Home Builders. The associations may go by different names, i.e., Building Industry Association. You can find this information on the Internet at www.nahb.org/designations. You can also use your local phone book to find information. Your local Chamber of Commerce may also have this information or be able to direct you further. Other places that may be helpful are your local area agency on aging or senior community centers.
Once you have contacted the local association for your area, ask for a list of CAPS designated remodelers or builders. Look over the names and begin with one close to your home. Set up an appointment to discuss your project and meet the CAPS. It is wise to meet with more than one remodeler so that you can compare. Some questions you may want to ask during this interview are:
- How long have you been certified as a CAPS?
- How much of your work is performed for the aging-in-place market?
- Are your employees CAPS as well? If subcontractors will be used, will they be CAPS?
- Will you coordinate with my Health Care Professional? (It may be a Case Manager or Occupational Therapist)
- Do you have pictures of projects similar to what I am looking for?
- How will you blend this work in seamlessly with my home?
When you are ready to make your home improvement modifications, keep in mind that you are purchasing a service rather than a product. A CAPS will be able to foresee your future needs and make recommendations for improvements accordingly.
As with anyone that you hire to do work at your home, request references and check those references. Check with the Better Business Bureau and the Internet can provide reviews if they have been submitted by previous customers.
This is your home and it is your choice who you hire to make home improvements. Make sure you do your homework ahead of time to ease the decision making process when it comes time to selecting and hiring a CAPS.
