Getting the Most from Your Health Insurance Plan

By: Carol Allen, Director of Public Affairs and Program Development, Gateway HealthSM

Most insurance plans offer you resources, tools and even access to health-related services and products. Here you’ll find helpful tips for making any health insurance plan work for you.

Making the Most of Your Medical Benefits

Remember, many plans provide more than just basic medical coverage.  Check to see if your plan offers dental, vision, hearing and prescription medication coverage. Some plans even offer extra benefits often at no charge such as fitness center memberships, transportation services, medical supplies and health/wellness programs.

If your current plan does not meet your needs, switching plans could be an option worth considering.  Open enrollment, the period where you are able to switch health plans, is in the fall for most commercial and Medicare plans.  If you have both Medicare and Medicaid or Medicare and a chronic condition, you may qualify for a Special Needs Plan (SNP) and can enroll in a plan any time during the year, not just during open enrollment.

Call your health plan provider today to discuss how you can get the most from your plan.
