Say You Saw It in the Senior Citizen’s Guide to Cleveland
The objective of this article is to help make your
decision to downsize easier and reduce the stress
associated with the process. I achieve this objective
by first identifying the obstacles people face when
downsizing. I then illustrate the six tasks needed to
overcome these obstacles.
Obstacles to Downsizing:
The Seniors Real Estate Specialist Council has
identified eleven obstacles people face when considering
whether to downsize or not.
1. Fear of change and loss of familiar routines that
define and give meaning to daily life.
2. Fear of loss of independence, control, and
privacy, or a fear of abandonment.
3. Fear of making a wrong and irrevocable decision.
4. Emotional attachment to a home or place. Adult
children may be more sentimentally attached
than their parents and resistant to breaking up a
family home.
5. Holding on to a property for the heirs to inherit.
6. Deferred maintenance or debt on home.
7. Physical and/or cognitive impairments.
8. Feelings of melancholy with realization that
move could be viewed as last living situation and
remaining time is short.
9. Overwhelmed by the tasks involved with selling
and moving.
10. Lack of family or support network to assist.
