There is an amazing alternative to eye drops and
their side effects for glaucoma treatment: laser
surgery that can greatly lessen or virtually eliminate
your dependence on eye medications. Selective Laser
Trabeculoplasty, or SLT, is a form of laser surgery that
is used to lower intraocular pressure in glaucoma. Since
the procedure is an accepted glaucoma treatment, and
is FDA approved, it is covered by Medicare and medical
insurance. The cost for an uninsured individual or with
an insurance co-pay will vary.
The SLT laser procedure is fast, safe and effective
and is usually effective for 2-5 years. SLT is a cool,
non-thermal laser treatment and can be repeated if
your pressure increases later. The type of laser used
has minimal heat energy absorption because it is only
taken up by selected pigmented tissue in the eye.
Sometimes it is referred to as a “cold laser.” Because
of this, the procedure produces less scar tissue and
has minimal pain. This laser surgery eliminates the
inconvenience of an eye drop regimen, as well as the
expensive monthly trips to the pharmacy.
SLT only targets specific cells of the eye using an
advanced laser system. This leaves surrounding tissue
intact and allows only certain cells to be affected. With
