In 1887, the forefathers of Indianapolis came up with the idea of operating a natural gas company as a not-for-profit Public Charitable Trust, solely for the benefit of customers and the community. Today, this Trust lives on as Citizens Energy Group, a broad-based energy service company engaged in the following businesses:
- Citizens Gas – Local distribution company (LDC) transporting natural gas to nearly 266,000 customers in and around Indianapolis.
- Citizens Thermal – District steam heating and chilled water cooling provider serving business, institutional and industrial facilities across the Downtown Indianapolis area.
- Citizens Resources – Formerly, Citizens By-Products, a wholly-owned subsidiary engaging and investing in various energy-related businesses.
- Citizens Oil – Producing oil in Greene County, Indiana

The Trust has been a Total Quality company since 1986, pursuing ways to meet and exceed customer expectations through assessment tools provided by the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Program. Citizens has long been an industry leader for customer satisfaction and affordable service. In fact, Citizens Gas has consistently been ranked among the top five utilities in the Midwest for customer satisfaction in an annual survey by J.D. Power & Associates. Rates for Citizens Gas and Citizens Thermal have consistently been below industry averages.
Although customer satisfaction is always our focus, Citizens also fosters an active Community Investment Program that works to improve the quality of life throughout our community. At Citizens, community investment targets energy assistance, economic and neighborhood redevelopment, quality education, and diversity.
