Founded in 1903, East Orange General Hospital (EOGH) plays an ever-increasing role in the lives of families across the Oranges and its surrounding areas. As the only remaining independent, fully accredited, acute-care community hospital in Essex County, our mission is clear: improve the health and welfare of our community through the delivery of high-quality, compassionate and accessible healthcare services. That mission is fulfilled each and every day by our caring and skilled nurses, doctors and dedicated employees who, collectively, have transformed our hospital into an essential healthcare facility.
What sets us apart is that our Hospital is embedded within the fabric of the communities we serve. A 211-bed hospital, EOGH is a major healthcare resource treating over 100,000 individuals annually. For more than a century, our Hospital has embodied a culture of caring that is vital to healing. In 1944, the first-ever Candy Striper program was started.
Additionally, the Hospital continues to be the leader in Behavioral Health in Essex County, as well as the safety-net provider of Renal Dialysis Services, ensuring that those without resources still receive the care they deserve. We also provide a comprehensive array of primary care and specialty services including Same Day Surgery, Physical Rehabilitation Services, Family Health Center, Emergency Medicine, Outpatient Hemodialysis, Hyperbaric/ Wound Care Center, and Vascular Services. But, East Orange General Hospital is much more than a list of resources.
We think that a special factor in our success is that two-thirds of our hospital employees live in the communities we serve and at every turn we engage community partners such as faith based organizations, community agencies and schools to prevent illness before it happens, which makes where we live a better place.
The results of these efforts have helped to transform countless lives. We recently opened a Supportive Housing Development, named Hope Gardens, which provides apartments to adult individuals with behavioral health needs who are homeless in Essex County. We also established a Cardiac Rehabilitation and Fitness initiative and increase the size of both our Emergency Room and Family Health Center.
This year we will continue to invest in our patients. We will soon implement a comprehensive new Electronic Health Record program and unveil the latest in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technology.
