Ursuline Senior Services – Cart to Heart Shopping Program
Who We Are...
At Ursuline Senior Services we have been providing needed services to our community’s elderly population for over 25 years and are pleased to introduce our Cart to Heart shopping program. The Cart to Heart program began as a pilot project in late 2006 serving just current consumers in a limited number of zip codes; with its success, came our decision to offer this service to a broader community base. Cart to Heart provides older adults who are unable to shop for themselves, a means to receive groceries on a regular basis.
Volunteers not only bring needed groceries but also a friendly visit. Volunteers are key in identifying seniors who may be at risk and in need of additional services.
What We Do
Has grocery shopping become difficult or impossible? Is it hard to find someone reliable to shop for you? We can help!
Ursuline Senior Services is now offering grocery shopping services to homebound seniors in Allegheny County.
The Cart to Heart program:
- Provides shopping service once or twice a month
- Delivers groceries right to your kitchen, where a volunteer can assist with putting groceries away
- Provides a friendly visit from a volunteer
How the Program Works
Ursuline Senior Services screens, trains and oversees all of the shopping service volunteers. Volunteers are matched with a senior, based on their preferred shopping area and availability.
The Cart to Heart staff conduct a brief initial home visit to explain the program. We work with each senior to establish a shopping account. This safeguard protects the senior by ensuring thatvolunteers do not handle the money directly.
Seniors can choose to have their shopping done once or twice a month. Prior to the scheduled shopping date, the senior is contacted for their grocery order.
On the shopping date, the volunteer purchases the groceries, delivers them to the senior’s home and reviews the order. The volunteer has a friendly visit with the senior, and can also assist in putting away the grocery items.
There is a small service fee for each trip, based on monthly income.
Seniors are provided with a monthly statement of their shopping trips and account.
Who Is Eligible?
To be eligible for the Shopping Service, you must:
- Be age 60 or older
