11. Belief that remaining in existing home is “living

The Six-Task Downsizing Process: (adapted
from the SRES Designation Manual page 78)
The order in which each task should be completed
depends on the needs of the person or couple who is
downsizing and is determined at the initial goal setting
Task One: Set Written Goals with a Timeline.
• Process usually takes 2 to 3 months.
• Begin early.
• Where will you be moving? Smaller home, LTC
facility, assisted living, independent living, etc.
• Write down an action plan by room, day, week,
month, or other milestone.
• Having a plan written down reduces stress and
makes the tasks involved more manageable. As
the old cliché’ goes: “How do you eat an elephant?
One bite at a time.”
Task Two: Assess Future Needs.
• Is it family sized? For example, ask yourself, will
you need all the family camping gear?
• What furniture will you need?
• Moving into a condo or other facility with exterior
maintenance provided means you don’t need all
the lawn care equipment or gardening tools.
Task Three: Sort into Categories. Use various colored Post-
It Notes to sort items.
• Move.
• Maybe.
• Sell.
• Give away.
• Donate.
• Throw out.
